Networking Myths Versus Reality

Despite the demonstrated success of networking as a primary job search strategy, some people have a very hard time doing it. They recognize its value for other people but do not think that they have the personal characteristics to make it work. If you count yourself among the 'networking nervous,' you probably also think of yourself as a person who is shy, at least around people you do not know well. but you may also be under the influence of one or more false myths about networking.

Myth - Networking is only for extroverted backslappers.

Fact - People who are naturally outgoing may feel more comfortable with networking than their more reserved counterparts, but this does not necessarily mean that they are better at it. Introverts usually have valuable gifts that they can capitalize on -- the capacity to listen attentively, ask thoughtful questions and execute thorough follow-up. And networking gets easier once you take the plunge. Like other mentally and emotionally challenging tasks, it resembles the lift off of a rocket, It takes the most energy at the beginning -- making your first couple of telephone calls and setting out on your first meeting or two. As you gather momentum, it gets easier. Before every contact remind yourself that networking is the standard way of doing business and finding employment in the United States.

Myth - Only the desperate and minimally qualified have to network. People who are good have jobs or they can get them the "regular way" through online job boards and newspaper ads.

Fact - Nealy everybody has to look for employment at one time or another in their lives Many, through no fault of their own, go through the process several times. These veterans know that many of the best positions are not advertised and that highly qualified candidates put more of their energy into networking than scanning help wanted pages. Networking is the "regular way" of getting a job.

Myth - It is humiliating to go around begging people for a job.

Fact - It certainly is. But remember, the purpose of networking is not to beg. In fact, it is not even to ask for a job. You do not go to a networking meeting expecting to get a job. You go expecting to learn about a person, his or her company and the state of the profession in your new area.

Myth - Networkers impose on the people they contact.

Fact - The vast majority of people enjoy talking about their company and their work and are glad to lend a hand to a newcomer. Many people you speak with will have obtained their current positions through networking. At the same time, you will give them an opportunity to add to their network; there may be a time when you will be able to help them.

Myth - Networking is only for executives.

Fact - Networking works equally well for all occupations and both genders.

Myth - Networking is too time consuming.

Fact - Networking does take time and effort, but whether it takes too much time depends on how badly you want a job commensurate with your abilities. The more committed you are to your job search, the more committed people will be to helping you with it.

Very well said! Networking sure is time consuming but people who are well networked are always at a advantageous position. May that be Sales, Marketing, HR,... Its all about your PR! If your networking is right its very easy to find a Job.
One online recruiting firm have even come up with an idea of using your network (only for those in US, India and Indonesia) of co-workers, boss and friends to help find them job through their portal while you are handsomely rewarded for your efforts ;)

Really enjoyed reading your blog.

You hit it on the head when you stated the fact: "Fact - Nealy everybody has to look for employment at one time or another in their lives ..."

Many of the clients that I advise all feel the same way when it comes to networking for employment. What job seekers and others who want to be great at networking must understand is that it's not about being great at it...its just about doing it.

People always ask, "what should I say." In short, you could say literally anything to a prospective "networkee" (as I like to call them) as long as it doesnt involve:

-religion
-politics
-anything of a negative tone

of course the first two are subject to the situation but in general those are the only guidelines I give as what not to say.

If you can keep the conversation started and focused on the other person you will build a valuable connection out of anyone you meet.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for clarifying this.

I just got a job and it took me 10 months to find one. I assumed the "West Virginia" state of mind.
In the remote areas of West Virginia the guys drive to places like Atlanta or Washington DC suburbs to work all week. Then on Friday night they drive back home.

After four months of no luck at all finding a local job I decided to start looking nationwide. I live 7 hours from my new job and plan on going home once or twice a month. Fortunately my kids are all grown and out of the house. I have rented a cheap apartment near work.

Would I prefer not to do this? Of course! But its better than no work at all and I can't stay unemployed any longer.

Good luck to anyone out there trying to find work.

Very true! I've found that there are a TON of people out there that don't know anything about positions out there for me - but they DO know about positions out there. They're looking for someone to fit their organization as much as I'm looking for an organization that fits me.

People are people; meeting people and learning about their professional experiences, whether it directly affects your job search or not, is a valuable experience that shouldn't be brushed aside.

I agree that networking is a critical component of success. It is really the social extension of our work lives. Facebook wouldn't be anything if we weren't social creatures. One of the keys is to be doing what you want to do. It is difficult to build a network of people and asking them for help in getting you work for antique car restoration when everyone knows you hate old cars. As a business coach I get so many people in the wrong job or business it is mind boggling. I guess that is why 80% of the people out there are unhappy at work, they are in the wrong job. Since I can't help everyone, I wrote a book to help people find themselves, and their perfect job, then networking is fun and easy because you are talking about what you love to do!
Http://www.sonowwhatscott.com is a quick link to the book. I know shameless plug, but I am having fun, are you? Happy networking.

Great post. You cannot afford to NOT network these days. It opens so many doors. The past 3 jobs I've held were due to knowing someone that was willing to recommend me for a position. The result was the easiest interview I've ever experienced where we talked as if I was already hired.

You can't just rely on social networking skills either. Got find employment agencies in Edmonton or wherever you are located at cause they will help you find a job whether you are facing diversity or not, have a disability or not. They are often times well known to be truly equal opportunity agencies and helps a lot of people all of the time as well. It's worth a shot, wherever you are located at.

Hi there! At the risk of sounding super spammy, I was curious if you might be interested in swapping links to each other’s site. I made a fairly relevant site about getting a promotion and am trying to build some exposure – swapping links would go a long way.
I think your writing is great and really enjoyed your site here! Hope to hear from you soon and keep up the fantastic work. Cheers.
